Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex-Igbo group has urged President Tinubu to release the leader of Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu following the none compliance of people of South East on the ongoing hunger protest in the country.
Ohanaeze in a statement by its Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, thanks Igbos for heeding to the earlier directive for Igbos to stay clear and not join the August 1st Hunger protest.
Daily9jaInfo recalled that Nigerians today, embarked on hunger protest against the government of President Bola Tinubu.
The protest met zero compliance in South East as people instead stayed at home and others went about their normal business.
Reacting, Ohanaeze said President Tinubu should therefore see that Igbos are not his enemy. The group hailed the Infrastructural Strides of the minister of works, Dave Umahi, adding that Nnamdi Kanu’s release should be released.
The full statement read:
The recent nationwide protests have stirred a wave of astonishment across the nation as the Southeast region recorded total compliance to the earlier position and directives of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
We had urged Igbos at home and in the diaspora to boycott the protests based on historical sad experiences, fear of loss of lives and properties, ongoing infrastructural projects in the Southeast led by Senator Dave Umahi, and the demand for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.
We are pleased to note that the Igbos demonstrated unique resilience, boldness, firmness, and willpower to defy intimidation and manipulation by external detractors. We appreciate all political leaders, especially Senator Dave Umahi, for their efforts to ensure neutrality in the protests.
Ndigbo have spoken loudly through the absence of protests in the Southeast, showcasing a new unity and resolve to end external manipulation and bad influences.
We call on Ndigbo to remain steadfast and resist pressures to join protests. The infrastructural revolution led by Senator Dave Umahi has rewritten the state of Federal Expressways in the Southeast, highlighting the progress being made. We also urge for the release of Nnamdi Kanu and the creation of an additional state for the Southeast to address political persecutions and grievances.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has seen that Southeast and Ndigbo are not enemies and should release Nnamdi Kanu as a gesture of goodwill. We anticipate more viable projects for the Southeast and hope for continued cooperation and understanding.
Thank you to all Igbos for their perseverance, nerve, and resolve in this challenging time. Let us continue to stand together and work towards a better future for all.
Signed,
Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro
Secretary General
