The apex Igbo socio-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has accused the governors of Southeast and leaders from the region of dehumanizing the leader of Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The group in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by the Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, call on fellow Igbo brethren to direct their attention towards the Southeast Governors rather than President Bola Tinubu regarding the deteriorating security situation in the Southeast, the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and the absence of his release from the Department of State Services (DSS).
“It has come to our realization that Southeast Governors and certain Igbo leaders have not provided the essential assurances required to explore political resolutions for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.”
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo underscores the crucial need for unity and cooperation among Southeast Governors and esteemed Igbo personalities such as Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Pa Ebuitu Ukiwe, Sen Ike Nwachukwu, and others, in providing the Federal Government with assurances regarding Nnamdi Kanu’s future conduct post-release. Regrettably, it appears some Southeast Governors and Igbo elites have chosen to exploit Nnamdi Kanu’s detention for personal gain, political bargaining, and the pursuit of political relevance.
“It is disheartening to note that certain Southeast Governors and Igbo leaders seem content to visit Nnamdi Kanu in the DSS facility, diminishing him to the status of a “monkey in the Zoo.” They seem more inclined to visit and take photographs with Kanu in detention rather than actively seeking political solutions for his release.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo expresses deep concern over the behavior of Southeast Governors, Senators, Representatives, Religious Leaders, Traditional Rulers, and other prominent Igbo figures who prioritize visits to Kanu in detention over seeking his release and addressing the pressing security challenges in our region.” The statement said.
The Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, further decried the alleged plots by Southeast Governors, Igbo Elders, and National Assembly members to prolong Nnamdi Kanu’s detention until 2027.
He said the failure of some Southeast Governors to utilize their political ties to advocate for Kanu’s release is regrettable and underscores self-interest over communal welfare.
“It is paramount for Ndigbo to hold Southeast Governors, Igbo Elders, National Assembly members, and Traditional Rulers accountable for the extended detention of Nnamdi Kanu, and refrain from laying blame on the Federal Government or President Tinubu. The Federal Government awaits a united stance and commitments from the Igbo community to facilitate a potential release of Nnamdi Kanu.” Mazi Isiguzoro said.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo urged all stakeholders in the Southeast to set aside personal ambitions and unite in the pursuit of Nnamdi Kanu’s release and the resolution of security challenges in our region. Through collaborative efforts and a united approach, we can achieve significant progress on this matter.
