The Mayor of Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, Mr. Newman Azu, has set up three mega viewing centres at Obehie, the commercial nerve centre of the area for the final match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire that comes up on Sunday, February 11, 2024.
In a statement released on Friday, Azu stated that the decision to set up the free mega viewing centres for the live transmission of the AFCON match was stimulated by need to give his people a sense of belonging, and satisfy their interest in the area of sports.
He disclosed that sports development was at the heart of the governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, adding that the governor was committed to the general welfare of the people of Abia State.
The release reads in part:
“We feel what our people feel, and we know that they love sports, particularly football, so we thought it desirable to give them an opportunity to watch the AFCON final match free of charge at a venue that will make for great interaction among them.
“It is actually going to be first time in the life of our local government area for any government to set up free mega viewing centres for a continental football match, and we do believe that our people will be thrilled by the gesture.”
Azu also called on the people of Ukwa to continue to give support to the administration of Governor Otti, who he said was determined to provide a new lease of life to all residents of Abia State.
