Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, is calling on the Presidency and the National Assembly to prioritize the use of cement technology in the construction of federal highways in 2024, and to rescind contracts that do not comply with this directive.

First and foremost, Ohanaeze Ndigbo commends President Tinubu and the Ministry of Works for approving funds and overseeing the ongoing repairs of federal highways across the country.

As a result of these initiatives, the confidence of Nigerians has been restored. For the first time in many years, we are witnessing the construction of high-quality and durable roads utilizing concrete and cement technology, which have a lifespan of up to 50 years.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has highlighted an alarming concern. “It has come to our attention that some contractors are not complying with the Federal Government’s directives to construct our federal highways with concrete and cement technology,” he stated.

This technology not only serves as a cost-effective approach but also significantly reduces the need for foreign exchange, prevents frequent upward reviews of road projects, and ensures long-lasting infrastructure. In contrast, asphalt roads have a lifespan of only 10 years, and the prices of asphalt are experiencing a geometric progression.

On the other hand, the rise in the price of concrete is based on arithmetic progression, making it a far more sustainable and economical choice. Contractors who deviate from these directives are unnecessarily utilizing taxpayers’ money and must be held accountable.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo strongly urges the Presidency, through the Ministry of Works, and the National Assembly to cooperate in enforcing the laws and regulations that support the use of concrete and cement technology in the construction of federal highways in 2024.

This will not only boost the economy but also create employment opportunities for the youth in line with the local content regulations. Given that time is of the essence, it is imperative that the construction of all federal highways strictly adheres to the use of concrete.

Alternatively, the National Assembly should consider enacting or amending existing laws to empower the federal government to revoke non-compliant contracts and engage competent local contractors for the execution of all projects.

The Minister of Works, Senator Engr Dave Umahi has demonstrated both the expertise and political will necessary to replicate the success achieved in Ebonyi State on a larger scale.

By prioritizing cement technology, we can expedite the delivery of top-notch highways and standard roads throughout the country in 2024, ensuring that Nigerians enjoy a well-connected road network in line with President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.
